WWW.AGRM.ORG MAY/JUNE 2017 19 -STOP SHOP OF HOPE T his fall, Houston will become home to a unique and life- changing approach for addressing the growing incidence of family homelessness in the fourth-largest city in the United States. It’s called Star of Hope’s Cornerstone Community, and there is nothing quite like it anywhere in the country. Star of Hope Mission, a Christ-centered community and an AGRM member, was founded in 1907 to serve Houston’s homeless men. Today it provides more than 50 percent of the shelter beds and related emergency services for 7,000–8,000 homeless men, women, and children in the city of Houston each year. In the last decade, Star of Hope has witnessed a growing need to help homeless single women and families with not only emergency homeless services, but also with making the difficult transition to permanent affordable housing with needed supportive services nearby so they can achieve permanent, independent living.
