PHOTOGRAPHY

First place: Untitled

Seattle's Union Gospel Mission
Seattle, Washington

Judge's comments: As I worked at narrowing down the candidates in this budget category, this portrait made me stop and want to know her story. The black background and colorless decisions were key. Without the distracting color and distracting background, the contrast draws the viewers attention to this woman's unfiltered emotion with amazing detail. I was so captivated by her face that it took me a moment to see the tear, which only drew me in more; therefore, I gave this portrait the award of excellence.

PHOTOGRAPHY

First place: Robbert

Yakima Union Gospel Mission
Yakima, Washington

Judge's comments: As I went though the many images, Robbert stood out to me. Not only is the photography high quality and neat with an excellent use of lighting, color, and contrast, there is also Robbert's distinct personality that is incredibly captivating. The composition of this photograph takes me directly to his eyes which show an unmistakable joy despite his age, capturing this simple moment in time. Ultimately this image generally has the affect of "I want whatever he's got;" so, I naturally gave Robbert the Award of Excellence.
