Expansion Program: Jamaica
| |
|
At the 2008 AGRM convention in Dallas, TX, the decision was made to work with individuals in Jamaica as the government there addresses the issue of homelessness. It was determined, in cooperation with the Jamaican government, that the focus would be in the communities of Kingston and Montego Bay. This project expands the AGRM's focus of starting new rescue missions beyond the boundaries of the US and Canada to our neighbors in the Caribbean who have made a commitment to address the needs of their homeless population. The government of Jamaica recognized a need for an effective program to help the homeless after an incident in 1995 that created a public outcry. As a result, a nationally coordinated "Program of Care" was commissioned by the Prime Minister. This was to begin in St. James Parish. A network of care has been organized in the area that includes a Care Center, the Poor Relief Department, Cornwall Regional Hospital's Psychiatry Department and the Community for the Upliftment of the Mentally Ill (CUMI). This project was chosen because of a demonstration of commitment by the Jamaican government and multiple Non-government Organizations (NGO) on the island to work at meeting the needs of the homeless. This is an opportunity for the AGRM to help build effective ministries in an area with demonstrated need and a willingness to take the steps necessary to build into the lives of individuals. | |
