| Content | Street Smart Express on February 8, 2011 Andy Bales, CEO of Union Rescue Mission (Los Angeles, Calif.) has just been named FundRaising Success Magazine’s 2011 Fundraising Professional of the Year. Andy received this prestigious honor in part because of Union Rescue Mission’s (URM) successful “Save Hope Gardens” campaign, which raised more than $3.8 million in just 37 days. Hope Gardens sits on 77 acres adjacent to the Angeles National Forest and is a transitional living permanent supportive housing facility where up to 175 women and children will find sanctuary from the dangerous streets of Skid Row. While we rejoice with Andy and the URM family regarding this great news, we also want to ask you to be praying for some serious health matters that Andy has recently disclosed. During the holiday season, Andy feared he was losing his 40-year battle with Type 1 diabetes and a 12-year effort to keep his kidneys functioning. He learned that his kidneys were functioning at just 16 percent; 15 percent and below is considered kidney failure. In the months ahead, Andy will begin dialysis, likely by July or August. And he has been placed on the list to receive both a kidney and pancreas transplant. His doctor has urged him to keep working, even after dialysis begins. For a more complete description of these medical trials and what lies ahead, read Andy’s blog. Andy Bales is arguably one of North America’s most recognized and most quoted rescue mission leaders. He brings over 25 years of experience in community outreach and service to “his homeless friends”, as Andy puts it, as he leads Union Rescue Mission into a new era of unique and innovative services for Los Angeles’ Skid Row community. Please join us in lifting up Andy and his family in your prayers. |
