A foot-warming effort: Nationwide, communities gather socks for needy families
“The Odd Life of Timothy Green” Sock Drive to aid thousands
Colorado Springs, CO (Aug. 15, 2012) – In more than 200 American cities, people are giving to care for needy families’ feet as part of a campaign inspired by a Disney film released today, “The Odd Life of Timothy Green.” The Association of Gospel Rescue Missions (AGRM) launched the Sock Drive July 9 in cooperation with The Walt Disney Studios and Hanes.
“Often it’s difficult for community members to know how to best help others in less-fortunate situations,” said AGRM President John Ashmen. “For homeless individuals, who often stand and walk a great deal, clean, dry pairs of socks offer much warmth and comfort. The Sock Drive is a caring, effective way people can reach out to their neighbors in need.”
Boxes set up at about 500 locations across the country – such as theaters, grocery stores, churches, and schools – invite community members to contribute new socks until the drive wraps up Sept. 3. The socks will go to more than 100 rescue missions, each a member of AGRM, where staff members and volunteers will distribute them to men, women and children they aid.
Hanes will match North American donations up to 10,000 pairs of socks.
“We are grateful to be collaborating with The Walt Disney Studios and Hanes as well as numerous community organizations for this important effort that will provide much-needed socks for thousands of families across the nation,” Ashmen said.
